There are stacks of memoirs written by sick people. There are none written by a kidney transplant patient. And his prospective donor.
Believe me. I know. I've been searching for one of those books to help me get through each day. It doesn't exist.
That is why I decided to write the book myself.
After fourty-two years of Crohn's disease - multiple face- to- faces with death- and losing all but 4 feet of my small intestine- I lost full use of my kidneys due to chronic kidney stones around 3 ago. Since then? Dialysis. 5 days a week. Along with that has come ICU emergency visits for various reasons...sepsis, pneumonia, infections from broken bones, and more. After the past 2 years of being on the kidney transplant list, I began a Facebook search for a donor. 10 unsuccessful donor offers later, Angela, number eleven, proved to be both a successful match and a truly committed donor.
We decided to diary about our process, and transform our writings into a book. We hope to offer inspiration, hope, and information to other donors/ transplant patients. And if this book encourages reflection among those who never considered becoming organ donors? That would be great too.
My sister, Julie Pohn-Noosbond, M. ED., (P.hd., in process) is a published author, and she has offered her assistance to us .
I want to write the book I needed to read.
Let's make that book a reality for other people like me.
Yours,
Gordon Pohn
